(Our 4-part study with Psalm 106 — including video, audio and notes — is available here
This Psalm reminds us of the blessing that is given to those who are judged in this age (1Pet 4:17).
1Pe 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
Keeping judgement means that we must go through the fiery trials (1Pet 4:12) of this life as well as the much tribulation (Act 14:22) that is promised to all those who are going to go unto perfection in this age by continuing in the truth (Luk 13:32 , Joh 8:31-32).
1Pe 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
Act 14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.
Luk 13:32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
Joh 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
Joh 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
It is impossible for us to know that the fox that Christ is speaking about in (Luk 13:32) is speaking of each of us who can only identify with those words of Christ after we experience the favor that God shows to us as we are judged in this age and learn of all the sin of the world that is within (1Joh 2:16). It is that judgement that comes upon us, the goodness of God that leads us unto repentance that we must learn to never despise but rather give thanks and praise unto God for these wonderful works unto the children of men (Rom 2:4 , 2Sam 12:7 , Psa 107:31)
Luk 13:32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.
1Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Rom 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
2Sa 12:7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
Psa 107:31 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
Our own iniquities chasten us (Jer 2:19) and so it is written that “He gave them their request”(Psa 106:15). God demonstrates his sovereign love and hand in creating the light and the darkness in our life and works all things, the light and the darkness (Ecc 1:11), to bring about the new creation that is formed on the third day, the third day representing the process of judgement that we must go through and the reason we are blessed in this age to be enduring through this process by the grace and faith God gives us (Isa 45:7 , Eph 2:8).
Jer 2:19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
Psa 106:15 And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.
Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
Isa 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
We observe in this study that the greatest idols and the hardest ones to detect are the self righteous acts or many wonderful works (Mat 7:22) that we believe we still can take some credit, or all credit for, in our flesh. These works include the dark sins of the flesh that we commit as well as the works of light that we do, and cannot yet identify as the workmanship of God who is working all these events according to the counsel of His will working within us, both to will and to do of His good pleasure (Isa 45:7 , Php 2:13).
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Isa 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
Php 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
The last part of our study concludes on a very positive and hope-filled statement: “He regarded their affliction when he heard their cry”. We are reminded with this one statement that God knows that our life will be filled with much trouble (Job 5:7) and that He makes provision for His people to endure unto the end demonstrated by His mercy and love toward us. He does know us and he does hear us and he does deliver us (Heb 5:7 , Psa 50:15 , Psa 27:5 , Psa 91:15 , 1Joh 4:17 , Mat 24:13 , Php 4:13).
Job 5:7 Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
Heb 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
Psa 50:15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
Psa 27:5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
Psa 91:15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
1Jn 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
Mat 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
