This two-part Psalm speaks about those who are blessed to come and see that it is the “poor and needy” who need a physician (Psa 86:1 , Jas 2:5 , Mar 2:17) and that it is God who does the dragging and converting as we’re drawn unto Christ (Joh 6:44) through circumstances that He causes that bring us to cry out for deliverance from the storms He raises and calms (Psa 107:29-30 , Mar 4:39). It is through those trials and many tribulations that our hearts our united to “fear thy name”.

Psa 86:1  A Prayer of David. Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy.

Jas 2:5  Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

Mar 2:17  When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Joh 6:44  No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Psa 107:29  He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
Psa 107:30  Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

Mar 4:39  And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Deliverance from sin comes through fiery judgement (1Pe 4:1-2 , 1Pet 4:12) that humbles the elect and causes us to lose our own sense of righteousness which is burnt up in the fiery trials of life so that we can be clothed with the righteousness of Christ (Rev 3:18 , 1Pe 1:7 , 1Pet 4:17 , Zec 3:3-4 , Rev 19:8).

1Pe 4:1  Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
1Pe 4:2  That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

1Pe 4:12  Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

Rev 3:18  I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

1Pe 1:7  That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

1Pe 4:17  For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Zec 3:3  Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.
Zec 3:4  And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

It is this evil experience that God is working in the lives of His people (Ecc 1:13) that joins or unites our hearts to fear His name (Psa 86:11). To fear his name is another way of saying that we will read, hear and keep the sayings of the prophecy, which will only be kept after we have been humbled under His mighty hand and acknowledge our need for our Saviour and Shepherd of our souls (Rev 1:3 , 1Pet 5:6 , Luk 1:47-48 , 1Pe 2:25).

Ecc 1:13  And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

Psa 86:11  Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

Rev 1:3  Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

1Pe 5:6  Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Luk 1:47  And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
Luk 1:48  For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

1Pe 2:25  For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

When we are blessed to overcome in this life, we lose our fear of what men can do to us (Mat 10:28), even as we are joined together as one body of believers who stand in the breach for one another before God (Eze 22:30), the end result is that He “unite(s) my/our heart(s) to fear thy name”.

Mat 10:28  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Eze 22:30 And I seek of them a man making a fence, And standing in the breach before Me, In behalf of the land–not to destroy it, And I have not found. (CLV)
